Birthday Observations

My 27th birthday was on Monday. It is funny how birthdays change as you get older. They just don't seem to hold the same thrill and excitement that they do when you are young. I remember anticipating my birthday almost as much as Christmas when I was little. A lot of that probably had to do with the amazing birthday parties my mom always planned for me. Her wonderful creativity always produced the most incredible themed birthday parties. She would let us pick out the theme and then almost everything at the party, from the games to the cake, centered around that theme. I remember having an international party, a mystery party (during the time that I was way into Nancy Drew), a pioneer party, a camping party, a circus party. It was always non-stop fun!!!

Now that I am older my birthday has kind of lost its thrill :) It is not that I am depressed about getting older. I actually love being the age I am and don't really feel very much older anyway so it doesn't really bother me that I am almost 30! I think maybe it is because now as a responsible "adult" my birthday no longer belongs just to me. As a school-aged child I got to enjoy the benefits of a summer birthday, which meant that my birthday was MY day. I didn't have to share my birthday with school, work, or anything else, nor did any of my friends. But now, unless my birthday is on the weekend, my birthday is overshadowed by the fact that it is just a regular work day for everyone else (at least now that I work for a school district I still get summer vacation and can enjoy the luxury of not having to work myself). So I guess what it comes down to is that I am selfish and I actually really like having one day a year that is all about ME!!! :)

So even though my actually birthday was just your average Monday, Jayson helped me to feel more like the birthday girl by bringing home some beautiful Cala Lillies as well as Cafe Rio (my favorite!) for dinner. Then he made some delicious molten chocolate cakes topped with raspberries for dessert!

Happy Birthday!! It's so funny reading your post because I had a lot of the same thoughts this year as well (mine was just Saturday-you know, the same as Brooke and Jaime!). I also had to come to terms that since I've got a kid, it can't be all about me. It's interesting how that happens. Hope that you aren't too disillusioned and you had a great b-day!

Lara, I'm such a bum! I totally remembered it was your birthday on your birthday but I didn't ever wish you happy birthday. So happy belated birthday! Your mom's parties were AMAZING!! I loved your birthday parties SO much. So many good memories. I feel the same way about birthdays. I like having my own day to do what I want and just have fun, but it doesn't always happen that way as an adult. Love ya!

I was actually thinking about you on your birthday, and was happy to see you had a great time and were well taken care of. I love you so much. And I am proud of you!
